Mark Wills - Looking For America

Mark Wills - Looking For America: "Looking For America"

Looking for America - huh?

Recently this song came into my life - Looking for America by a Country Music artist called Mark Wills. You see, I don't 'do' contemporary Country Music (give me The Carter Family yes - but not this stuff). I tried to avoid it but it kept coming back to me.

Go away I said, you're just a simple black and white thought with no subtly, no nuance. You've obviously never traveled, never thought about the world outside your own closed mind, never tried to walk a mile in someone else's shoes (or sandles, or bare feet!), but the song just kept sitting in my iTunes blinking at me... and making me think...about ...well, why I didn't like it.

Verse 1:
I’m chasing down a memory
Of the way that things used to be
Kids playing underneath an old street light
Knowing they were safe when they laid down at night
I’m looking for something I ain’t seen in a while

I'm a small town person, working class, but we always had enough. Life was fine - and I did play outside till dark. But what about the kids I used to watch on Fat Albert (ok, so they were cartoons and had Uncle Bill to protect them.....) Were they safe, safer than the kids in the inner city are now. Jay Z says that growing up in his tough neighborhood in Brooklyn there was a social structure - people looked after people to some degree - everybody knew who everybody was...until crack took a hold and the neighborhood collapsed.

Verse 2:
 I’m looking for a factory
Where a man can feed his family (I'm a bit of a feminist but I'll accept the 'man' thing here)
Not worried about them moving it south
Closing the doors and shutting ‘er down tomorrow
I’m looking for America

Ok, I agree whole heartedly - factories should stay in America!  Rah, Rah,...but wait. I LOVE my cheap Wal Mart clothes, no really I do...dang. But companies should stay in America - somebody should make them stay in America!!  big can of worms there...I'll move on.

Chorus:
The land of the free and the home of the brave
Seems like I just woke up one day and it was gone, long gone -
But I know in my heart it’s still out there
Can somebody please tell me where
I’m looking for, America

Too cheesy - it's right here Mark Wills...umm..wait...what do you mean?

Verse 3:
I’m searching for an old church steeple
Where inside you’ll find people
Who live their lives unashamed
And they ain’t afraid to say God’s name out loud
Yeah I’m looking for America

This one made me mad - America was founded on Freedom of Religion!  Right! We should all be able to pray and worship however we want - right?! Steeple?? This is obviously a statement about Christianity...This verse of the video is set in a protestant church - i think...anyway...so are you saying Mark Wills that Protestants are oppressed? Come on...really - well.??..Is this fear mongering??...I tried to call Mark Will's people to get an answer - and after the restraining order is lifted again I'll call again - you betcha.

But it got me thinking...what IS the state of religious tolerance in America today? On all sides? Can a country exist that doesn't subscribe to one faith one God...does it all just get too messy? Dang...again.

Repeat Chorus:

Bridge:
I’m out here looking for the truth
A few folks to wave the red, white and blue
Who still believe freedom isn’t free
And I guess it’s up to you and me to find it
Yeah we gotta find it
Cause we’re looking for...........what? what are we looking for M. Wills?

Well...I do like that Mark is saying to put the bag of chips down and get off the couch and do something if you don't like the State of the Union...but has he stopped preaching and started meddling?

And really...
Is the Truth out there?

Repeat Chorus:
